Awards and Recognition

This page is devoted to recognizing Iowa ASBO Members and School Districts earning awards and deserving recognition for exceptional advancement and service to the profession.

Iowa ASBO Professional Leadership Award Recipients

The Professional Leadership Award is one of the highest honors that Iowa ASBO bestows upon its members. The awards are not just a measure of extraordinary deeds or a lengthy career – they are a recognition of those school business officials who, throughout their career and lifetime, have demonstrated excellence in service to their school district, communities and their profession.

Recipients receive a plaque, invitation to state leadership conference, $1500 scholarship to a senior at their home district, $1,000 toward expenses to attend the next ASBO Int. conference.

 

2009 Recipients:

Marsha Tangen - Davenport Chief Finance Officer -

Marsha has served the Davenport Community Schools for 23 years with the most recent 13 years as Chief Financial Officer. Prior to becoming CFO, she was the Supervisor of Payroll and Accounting and prior to that position she began her school business career as Supervisor of Payroll. The following items will offer verification of her qualifications to receive Iowa ASBO’s highest form of recognition and appreciation.

 

She has been very involved in Iowa ASBO as an IASBO President in addition to serving as a regional director, professional growth committee member and mentor to beginning school business officials. Her willingness to share her expertise have included 10 presentations at the state and international  level in the last five years.  

 

Evidence of her commitment to continuing personal professional development find has attended every IASBO Spring and Fall conference in the past five years and the ASBO International Conference the last 12 years. She is a member of the first graduating Iowa School Business Management Academy and has been actively involved in many fiscal related sessions at both School Administrator of Iowa and Iowa Association of School Board meetings and frequently participates in vendor or special topic webinar sessions.

 

Mike Hamilton - Southeast Polk Finance Officer -

Mike Hamilton has served as a school business official in Iowa public schools for 36 years with the most recent 10 at Southeast Polk.  His prior districts of service included Sioux City and North Scott. Many innovative programs have been implemented during his years of service to enhance the efficiency of district operations.

 

He has been very involved in Iowa ASBO as an IASBO President, and participant on at least seven study and research committees. His willingness to share his expertise have included 18 presentations at the state and international  level. Hamilton’s service to the profession through ASBO International includes being   a  Certificate of Excellence Reviewer, and serving on the School Finance Research Committee and Bylaws Committee.

 

Evidence of his commitment to continuing personal professional development Mike Hamilton has attended every IASBO Spring and Fall conference in the past five years and the ASBO International Conference most of the last 25 years. He is a member of the first graduating Iowa School Business Management Academy and has been actively involved in many fiscal related sessions at both School Administrator of Iowa and Iowa Association of School Board meetings.

 

He has earned both the ASBO International and GFOA Certificates of Excellence in Financial reporting in all the three districts where he has been employed. 


2008 Recipients:

Jackie BlackJackie Black

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->Jackie’s accomplishments and contributions include 23 years in schoolbusiness with the last 10 at Newton.  She has served IASBO in a number of waysincluding serving on the nominations, professional growth and bylaws standingcommittees, the fiscal reserve study committee in 2005, being a mentor,secretary and chair of her region, and serving as President of IASBO in2005-2006.  Jackie has attended nine ASBOInternational Conferences and has been a presenter at IASBO and the Iowa School Business Management Academy. She is currentlyserving on the IASB ISCAP Board, the ISEBA Advisory Committee, and Departmentof Education Project Easier Task Force.

 

In her community, Jackie has served on the United Way annualcampaign, Big Brothers/Big Sisters advisory committee, retired Jasper Countyvolunteer advisory committee, and as the chamber of commerce educational coordinatorfor their Leadership Iowa program. She belongs to Chapter ME PEO, the FirstChristian Church Education Committee, and she serves as a children’s worship leaderand vacation Bible school teacher. Last, but not least, Jackie has recentlycompleted her Master’s Degree in finance through the University of Phoenix.She is shown receiving the awards from IASBO Board Member, Kurt Subra, CFO at West Des Moines Schools.

Joe Hintze

Joe’s accomplishments andcontributions include 32 years in school business management with the mostrecent 12 at North Scott.   He has beenvery involved in Iowa ASBO as an IASBO board member, regional director and as amember of the audit, GASB 45, and constitution committees. His willingness toshare his expertise have included at least six presentations at the state levelsince 2000, and has become our resident expert on activity fund policies andprocedures. In addition he has developed a Staff Handbook for Business OfficeProcedures. Grants for recycling projects were received from the Department ofNatural Resources in 2005 and 2007 as a result of his application efforts.

<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->He is a graduate of the Iowa School Business Management Academyand has missed only one IASBO conference in the last five years. Under Joe’sleadership the North Scott Schoolshas received the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting (CAFR) fromASBO and GFOA. He is also a Committee Member for the Public EmploymentRelations Board’s (PERB) Health Care Data Collection Project.  Joe is very active in the community as a currentmember and Past President of North Scott Kiwanis with his major projectinvolving organizing and running a developmental basketball league for grades1-6 that includes over 400 children annually. Joe is a member of St. Ann’sCatholic Church Christian Experience Weekend Team.  And last but not least is a little known skillset of serving as Santa Claus for Long Grove Civic League Children’s ChristmasParty. Pinnacle Award Winning Practices

ASBO International and Virco Inc. established the Pinnacle Awards Program to honor the innovative spirit of school business officials. Four Pinnacle Awards are given each year: one Pinnacle of Excellence Award, and three Pinnacle of Achievement Awards.


Pinnacle of Achievement recipients receive:

  • a cash prize
  • a crystal pinnacle award
  • their submissions are published in the association’s magazine, School Business Affairs

The recipient of the highest honor, the Pinnacle of Excellence, also receives:

  • $5,000 worth of furniture for his or her school district

Meritorious Budget Awards Program (MBA)

ASBO’s Meritorious Budget Awards Program (MBA), sponsored by ING, uses examples of the latest techniques from school business administrators to build your skills for developing, analyzing, and presenting your school system budget.

ASBO International Board Member

Paul Bobek, CPA and Executive Director of Administrative Services at Iowa City CSD, will serve a three year term on the Board of Directors of ASBO international beginning in January 2008. Iowa has in excess of 100 ASBO International members with only 10 states / provinces / countries having more members in ASBO International. With membership in any organization comes the responsibility to contribute to its leadership and development. Iowa has not provided a board member to ASBO International since Fred Wessendorf’s term in the 1970s. Paul Bobek has served as Iowa ASBO President and presenter on many topics as our local GASB expert. He felt the calling to give back to the parent organization and successfully ran for the ASBO International Board of Directors to offer his support and direction in that arena.

Recipients of Bridges to the Future awards at ASBO International

The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) and MetLife award scholarships to new school business officials who are interested in developing their knowledge, skills, and leadership. The Bridges to the Future Program is a great opportunity for new school business officials to network with colleagues, take advantage of professional development opportunities, and tap into myriad school business management resources. The scholarships fund recipients’ attendance at the annual ASBO International Conference and the Winter Leadership Conference.
